What Hispanic Heritage Month Means to Me Now

  • In Laura Sgroi

Since last year, Hispanic Heritage Month hits differently for me as a speaker.

More than ever, I feel the responsibility that comes with having a voice when I’m invited into a room to talk about who we are, where we come from, and what we bring with us.

Because yes, this month is about celebration. And I will always celebrate our people, our music, our food, our joy, our traditions and our pride. But I also want the conversations to go further.

I want us to talk about our contributions. Our history. The differences within our own community. The generations that came before us and what they made possible. The people coming behind us and what we are making possible for them. About identity, belonging, leadership, wellbeing, culture and what it means to be Hispanic in the U.S. today.

So kudos to the companies that are still making room and holding space for these conversations, not just for the celebration, but for the learning, reflection and connection that can come with it.

Hispanic Heritage Month gives us the invitation. What we do with it is up to us.

And if you haven’t planned something yet, it’s not too late.

I still have limited availability for Hispanic Heritage Month conversations and keynotes, in English or Spanish.

Let’s talk. Conversemos.

A little about me: I’m a bilingual and bicultural speaker, certified coach, author of In Our Thirties, and producer and host of En Los Ta. Originally from the Dominican Republic and based in Miami, I’ve spent more than two decades living and working in the U.S., bringing both lived experience and professional perspective to conversations about wellbeing, belonging, leadership, and the Hispanic experience. I’ve had the privilege of speaking and facilitating for organizations including Microsoft, Mastercard, Chubb, Sony Music Latin, NBCUniversal Telemundo, Jamestown, Nutanix, GitLab, and Vital Voices Miami, and with audiences across the U.S., Canada, Latin America, and Europe.
